SAVING PRIVATE RYAN (1998)

Director: Steven Spielberg

Starring: Tom Hanks, Matt Damon and Tom Sizemore

Plot Summary: Following the Normandy Landings, a group of US soldiers go behind enemy lines to retrieve a paratrooper whose brothers have been killed in action.

Saving Private Ryan set a new benchmark for realism in WWII films, and defined war movies for a generation. A film of scope and vision rarely experienced, its award-winning cinematography and sound editing helped convey the blood-chilling images of torn limbs as well as intimate personal moments between men fighting for their country and their humanity. Particularly worth noting is the film’s brutally realistic opening sequence of soldiers landing on Omaha Beach and the subtle effectiveness of Tom Hanks in the lead role. This has been referred to as one of the finest scenes ever shot on film.

Pranit: Saving Private Ryan was a little to long for its own good. The movie is beautifully directed, there is no doubt in that but what the movie really needs is crisper editing.
