American Beauty is what shot Sam Mendes (director of Skyfall) into the big leagues. Winner of 5 Oscars this movie works as a triumphant character study(I may be the only one in this world, but I preferred the indepth analysis of the characters in this movie to that offered by Scorsese in Taxi Driver), with Alan Ball's sensational script shining all the way through. Kevin Spacey definitely deserved his Oscar for this movie because of the sheer impact of his performance. You can't help but be repelled by his twisted thoughts, but after you are done sentencing him to damnation you can't help but feel sorry for him. Annette Bening is also amazing but Spacey steals her thunder. The music score also is done wonderfully. A definite one time watch.
