MONSIEUR LAZHAR (2011)

Director:
Philippe Falardeau

Writer:
Philippe Falardeau

Starring:
Mohamed Fellag
Sophie Nelisse
Emilien Neron and others

Monsieur Lazhar is an emotionally fulfilling ride set predominantly at a Montreal Elementary school. Set in modern times this movie beautifully explores the relation of a teacher and their students asking many difficult questions, leaving the audience pleading for answers. The movie drives home the point that death is not merely a tragedy but is also a phenomena that effects people in ways one would never be able to imagine. The emotional vulnerability instilled into Lazhar's (which Fellag plays with great panache) character is compelling. The climax was my favourite scene in the movie, as it was a perfect ointment for the wounds of the reeling students.
